Data protection in clubs – the Data Protection Foundation can help
Data Protection
Data protection is important. And it’s also possible to ensure data protection when volunteering, provided you know what to look out for. The Data Protection Foundation offers a practical – and, above all, free – introduction to this topic.
Data protection made easy for clubs: Free support for volunteers
Data protection has long been part of everyday life for clubs, initiatives and charitable organisations. Whether it’s membership administration, newsletters, social media, club websites or digital events: personal data is processed everywhere.
Data protection is, of course, important and necessary. But – what exactly do I need to bear in mind? And what am I actually still allowed to do?
This is exactly where the Data Protection Foundation’s services come in. The Foundation explains, in simple and practical terms, which requirements you need to follow and how data protection can be implemented in practice.
The Data Protection Foundation supports associations and charitable organisations
This charitable foundation was established by the Federal Republic of Germany and provides a wide range of information, resources and training programmes specifically for associations and volunteers. Its aim is to explain data protection in a way that is easy to understand, practical for everyday use and free from legal obstacles.
Content for beginners and advanced learners
Particularly helpful: the content is tailored to both beginners and those with prior knowledge. Anyone exploring the topic for the first time will find clear, easy-to-understand basics on data protection within associations in the ‘Basic Knowledge’ section. This covers the legal framework, information obligations, processing activities, data subjects’ rights and the role of the data protection officer:
Experienced club members can access practical guides, further information and digital tools.
The Data Protection Foundation’s range of resources also includes:
- concise information materials,
- practical guides for club work and voluntary work,
- a glossary of key terms,
- as well as digital tools such as a privacy notice generator.

It’s worth taking a look at the platform
The services offered by the Data Protection Foundation can be particularly helpful for smaller clubs, which often operate without full-time staff. They provide clarity and help you to establish data protection as an integral part of your club’s work.
The Foundation also offers regular free webinars, and you can listen to recordings of previous webinars, for example on the topic of:
- AI and data protection
- Member data requiring special protection
- Using social media in compliance with data protection regulations
- Digital membership management
- and much more
